MARIJUANA Status as of 2024
State-Approved MARIJUANA LAWS
Marijuana (Cannabis) remains illegal under U.S. federal law as a Schedule I substance, deemed to have high abuse potential and no accepted medical use. However, many state laws differ—some permit medical use with a doctor’s recommendation, others allow adult use and commercial sales, and some prohibit it entirely. The map below outlines where marijuana is legal for medical use, adult use, or not at all.

DRUG-IMPAIRED DRIVING LAWS
Marijuana is the most common illicit drug found in impaired drivers, often alongside alcohol (JAMA, 2018). As more states legalize high-potency marijuana, concerns about drug-impaired driving are growing. Unlike alcohol, drug-impaired driving laws vary by state, and there is no nationally accepted impairment standard for marijuana due to limited clinical research. Below is a map showing states that have legalized marijuana and their drug-impaired driving laws as of June 2020.
