Within the United States, there are a total of 33 separate HIDTA designated regions. Many of these regions have states that have elected to legalize marijuana for both medical and commercial adult use purposes.

The sharing of information between stakeholders is one of the key cornerstones of the success of the HIDTA program. When it comes to the topic of legalization, the stakeholders can be those entities involved in law-enforcement operations, public safety concerns, public health interests, anti-drug coalitions, and the formulation of laws and regulations created in evidence-based science findings.

Several of the regional HIDTA initiative have elected to produce what has been called a “Marijuana Impact Report” that establishes a baseline of data on the impact being realized to public safety and public health as a result legalization. Additionally, supplemental reports have been created that shows the changes from year to year concerning marijuana’s impact post legalization to a community. Providing a longitudinal look at data to understand these various community issues better.
