“Evidence supported that both recent and heavy lifetime cannabis use were associated with diminished brain activation and cognitive performance during working memory.” These are the findings of a recent study released in the January 28, 2025, edition of JAMA Network Open, (Gowin, J. et. al.). This study examined data for over 1000 adults, ages 22 to 36 years of age, with varying degrees of cannabis use history. Heavy lifetime cannabis users were those with more than 1000 uses (exposures) in their lifetime, moderate users had 10 – 999 exposures and “nonusers” were those with less than 10 lifetime uses. Researchers used data from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) records, toxicology reports, and cannabis use information to measure brain functions and working memory responses to form their conclusions. According to the authors, the areas of “working memory” and “cognitive performance” were most impacted by both recent cannabis use and heavy lifetime cannabis use.

The author’s note, ” These findings suggest that large, longitudinal studies are needed to assess the causality of cannabis use toward altering brain function and the duration over which these effects persist.”

The legalization of cannabis for medical and commercial adult use has been associated to “significant increases” in cannabis use disorders (CUD) and cannabis poisonings (CP) when compared to non-legalized states. The authors of this study, Jayawardhana, J. (et.al.), researched national patient records (N=110,256,536), from 2011 to 2021, with diagnoses of a CUD or CP, by yearly quarters. They then compared the findings of states that have legalized cannabis (medically, commercial adult use, or both) against similar diagnoses in non-legalized states. They found that the CUD and CP diagnosis rates, per quarter, were notably higher, (by 3 to 4-fold), in states that have legalized cannabis.

Among their findings included, the enactment of state medical cannabis laws (MCL) was associated to a 42.7% increase in the diagnosis of cannabis use disorders (CUD) and an 88.6% increase in cannabis poisonings (CPs). In those states that implemented “recreational cannabis laws” (RCL), the rates of cannabis poisonings (CP) increased by 31.6% in the adult population.

The authors caution that the implementation of cannabis legalization at the state level for, medical or “recreational” use, is associated to greater health risks for the adult population, increased impacts to the health care system and final costs associated to the treatment for (CUDs) or (CPs).

Individuals with a cannabis use disorder (CUD) have a 3 to 8 times higher risk of developing a “head and neck cancer” (HNC) when compared to non-cannabis users. These are among the findings of a new study released in JAMA Otolaryngology this week. Historically, these types of cancers have been associated to heavy tobacco and/or alcohol use. Given that many of the same carcinogens found in tobacco can be found in cannabis, this raised concerns about cannabis’s role in detected HNCs.

This study used patient data (deidentified), over a ten-year period comparing the occurrence of HNC in patients with a diagnosed CUD (N=116,076 patients) to those who did not use cannabis (N=3,985,286 patients) to arrive at relative risks factors. The authors (Gallagher, T. et.al.) found that when comparing non-users to those with a CUD, the risk of developing “any” HNC was 3.49 times greater in the CUD group. For location specific cancers in the CUD group, risk of oral cancer was 2.51 higher, oropharyngeal cancer (back of mouth and throat) was nearly 5 times higher, and laryngeal cancer (throat) was more than 8 times the risk, when compared to non-cannabis user group.

While the authors identify several potential relationships common to tobacco and cannabis use to adverse health outcomes, the call for more research to better understand this issue is clear.

When compared to the general population, individuals treated medically (hospital / ER) for a cannabis related issue have nearly a 4-fold increased risk of developing an anxiety disorder during the next 3-years. Within this same group, younger males were at greatest risk for developing an anxiety disorder by over 5-fold.

These are among some of the findings of researchers (Myran, D. et.al.) out of Ontario Canada. This study examined medical records in Ontario Canada from 2008 – 2019 for individuals without prior anxiety disorder (N=12,099,144) and who had a hospital visit due to a cannabis related incident (N=34,822). This data set accounts for medical treatments, outpatient data and hospital admissions for an estimated 97 precent of the population of the Canadian providence of Ontario.

According to the authors, “We found that individuals with an ED visit for cannabis use were at over 3-fold increased risk of having an incident ED visit, hospitalization or outpatient visit for an anxiety disorder within 3-years of the visit relative to the general population.” They further cited that once they excluded persons with a prior history of mental health issues or substance use disorders (SUD), a cannabis related ED visit was associated to a 9-fold risk of requiring treatment for an anxiety disorder.

A new genetic study, the largest of its kind to date, examined over 1 million individuals that suggests those with a Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) and adverse health issues, may be associated to traits found in their DNA. Researchers examined CUD data from 1,054,365 people associated in the “Million Veteran Program”. They identified four ancestorial origin groups for their meta-analysis (i.e., European, African, Americas and East Asian). At the genetic level, all ancestorial groups, except the East Asian cohort, showed varying levels of inheritability of traits that could be associated to being at risk of developing a CUD couple with adverse health outcomes. The ancestorial group with the highest number of genetic placeholders was “European”.

The researchers (Levey, D. et.al.) note that a person with a CUD has an increased “genetic liability” risk for adverse mental and physical health outcomes. A genetic liability that an individual consumer would have no way of knowing that they are at risk. This was concerning to the authors given the continued increases in cannabis use and expanded legalization.
