For those with a diagnosis of a Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD), a recent study in Denmark revealed a nearly two-fold increase in “unipolar depression” and a near four-fold increase in “bipolar” disorders. Authors Jefsen, O (et.al.) recently published their findings in JAMA Psychiatry (May 24, 2023).

This is a longitudinal study, ranging from 2005 to 2021, involving nearly 6.6 million people in Denmark. The study demonstrates a correlation, not causation, between a Cannabis Use Disorders (CUD), and the development of either a unipolar or bipolar disorder. Unipolar depression being defined as protracted episodes of depression. Whereas Bipolar being defined as a fluctuating cycle of deep depression followed by periods of highly elevated mood levels. Men being most prone to adverse outcomes.
