Older cannabis users are at greater risk of hospitalization or other adverse health outcome due to their age, co-existing health conditions, and interactions with prescribed medications. The results of a 15-year data analysis (2005-2019), of California hospital records, noted that cannabis-related visits to an Emergency Room (ER) for those over 65 increased substantially (1,808%) during this study. Those older adults who did not have any type of health insurance had higher ER visitation rates than those with health insurance. The existence of a comorbid health condition placed seniors at greater health risks. This study was published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society (JAGS / Nov 2022).

The authors, (Han, B. et.al.) call upon medical providers to be proactive and to routinely inquire of their geriatric patients concerning any cannabis use to make informed choices for patient care.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) for kids under 12 increase the risk of persistent cannabis use later in life by three-fold.

ACEs, for children, are incidents of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, emotional neglect, bullying, parental substance use or abuse, violence between parents, parental mental health problems or suicide, parental separation, or a parent convicted of criminal offense. Children (ages 0-12) who experience 4 or more ACEs are three times at greater risk of persistent cannabis use. Parental substance use/abuse and parental mental health issues (suicide attempts) were most influential on children when compared to non-cannabis users according to authors (Hines et.al.).

Nationally, calls to poison control centers due to children, under age six, eating marijuana edibles increased by over 6-fold from 2017 to 2021. Three years was the median age for these marijuana edible exposure calls. Two-year olds were the largest group, accounting over 25 percent of all pediatric edible exposure calls. The authors note that of all pediatric marijuana edible exposure calls, about 20 percent were admitted for treatment while about one-third were treated and released from an Emergency Department (ED).

This report was prepared by physicians (M. Tweet, MD, A. Nemanish, MD, and M. Wahl, MD) of several Emergency Medicine Departments in Illinois and the Illinois Poison Center in Chicago.
